Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Using the program Communicate:In Print you can help children with little speech but lots of ideas to get something on paper. Making story-boards provides the opportunity to elicit ideas, organise narrative, invite choosing, and make the child's idea come alive. The adult can add text later and put symbol support on critical key words. Then an adult can read the text and the child can 'read' the symbolised words to tell the story. He will be practising some important pre-reading skills.

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Print 2-up on A4 paper. Cut to A5 pages. The task is to look at the whole word and not just part of it. At the lower level the pages have words first with symbols and then without. The words only change by different word-endings. These are for good young readers or older children of lower ability who are focusing solely on the beginnings of words. Includes suggestions.

Supplied with notes about a way to work on the concept of size comparison. Illustrated with PCS or Widgit symbols. Work from real objects through matching pictures up to using general knowledge and the ability to think abstractly to sequence non-matching pictures and then text.

A Danish Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale (AKA The princess and the pea / The princess on the pea). Retold at three levels: simple plus symbol-support of Widgit/PCS symbols, early reading with illustrations, and a version as a poem to read aloud (or for readers with RA 10-11y). Illustrated with Widgit symbols. Good for receptive and expressive language. Text captions can also be used as a reading-for-meaning task with readers.

Eight pages with an action picture and 3 symbols to stand for Subject-Verb-Object. ‘Symbol reading’ can be an excellent way to prompt children with delayed language skills to string more words together in the correct order. Accept any efforts at a word for each symbol without correction or asking for the child to copy you. However you can give praise and confirm the effort by saying back the simplest grammatical version of the child’s effort.

Text or illustrations can be incorporated as appropriate to suit different ability levels. These examples may serve as prompts for making maps on these or other topics. A printed copy can be a starting point for adding new ideas around the edge.
